Chris & Sam’s nuptials and reception were held at Barrett Lane. This is my first time shooting at this quaint little venue and I love it. It’s a small family run function venue in Swan Valley and you can see how much effort function manager David Prnich and family have put into the venue and surrounding gardens. The function and kitchen staff ran an impeccible event and If you’re looking for a venue for up to 100 guests right in the heart of the valley, you definitely need to have this one on your list…

When couples enquire about my photography, the first contact almost always comes from a bride. Sometimes I don’t even meet the groom until the wedding day itself but this time Chris filled out my contact form to organise the meeting. It turns out Chris is quite the avid landscape photographer and wanted to make sure he was on top of the photography for their wedding. On the morning of the big day I noticed some beautiful prints of Chris’ work hung around the walls. If you understand what’s required to make beautiful landscape images you’ll know that it sure isn’t easy. A lot of photographers love landscape and travel photography, they find it therapeutic. That’s just another way of saying it requires vast amounts of patience and tenacity to get up or stay behind at a location long enough and often enough to have enough opportunities to get the shot. On top of that, most great or interesting locations are hard to get to and you need to haul quite a bit of kit.

Sam is awesome… she must love Chris. She’s followed him and hauled his gear, listened to his photography stories and probably gotten sick and tired of it but they’re still together. A bit like the way my wife is so when you find someone like that, you marry her!

And he sure did. To propose Chris dragged Sam out onto the beach in Margaret River at sunset under the guise of getting a special shot. I can’t remember in the story if she happily followed but let’s say she did and Chris successfully put a ring on it.

Guy and Kerrie tied the knot and held their reception at Mosmans Restaurant. We had a warm balmy 35 degree day followed with some late rain clouds just before the reception. This brought in one of those rare red sunsets that come around a handful of times a year (when I happen to also have a camera handy). Here are my favourite images from the day…

Actually most of the day was pretty normal with a beautiful church ceremony followed by family photos and bridal party photos. Then we managed to shoot a little downstairs at the aquarium before heading up to the reception.

When I met Clyde and Shona we were going through the timeline just like the above until we got to the reception and they said they wanted to do the cake cutting and first dance straight away. I told them the sun wouldn’t have set yet so best to have it later but they insisted they’d need to get “everyone in a dancing mood as early as possible”. That’s when my ears pricked up… “why?”

Then they told me about this cool music video idea which required participation from everyone so the earlier people were willing to dance the more committed they would be to the video.

I got the idea and couldn’t wait for it!

Here are my favourite images from the day. As for that video? Once you get to the bottom of my images, check it out at the end of the post!

Krystle and Patrick were married on a warm summer day at Caversham House in February. The first email I got from Krystle was back in August 2014 about 18 months before her wedding. I was in China at the time visiting my wife’s family and wasn’t due back for another month so we exchanged a LOT of emails…. thousands of words in fact.

From that email exchange I felt like we clicked and spoke the same language. I could definitely see that Krystle was very thorough and organised but had a lot of questions and concerns she wanted addressed. It’s totally understandable as most couples get to meet me before booking and I was out of town for a long time. In her own words Krystle said:

Picking and booking the right photographer is of the utmost importance to me.

So we discussed everything, right down to the process of culling and editing photos. I’m not afraid of any questions, in fact I welcome them because of all the people around on the wedding day, I’m usually the one constant person within reach of the bride and groom throughout the day. So on top of the beautiful images, you’ll get peace of mind and a neverending smile.

Below is a recap of the day through our lenses (Adrian and I).

Justin & Elaina’s wedding was one of my favourites of the year, just a perfect combination of what I feel are the most special places to photograph if you’re getting married in WA. We started at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough with a magnificent view of the ocean (in fact the last time I shot in this room we were looking out onto a thunderstorm!). We moved from the coast up to the Wanneroo Botanical Gardens for the ceremony, then out to some fields next to Lake Joondalup and then back to Hillarys for the reception at AQWA…

We started at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough with a magnificent view of the ocean (in fact the last time I shot in this room we were looking out onto a thunderstorm!). We moved from the coast up to the Wanneroo Botanical Gardens for the ceremony, then out to some fields next to Lake Joondalup and then back to Hillarys for the reception at AQWA.

Elaina looked like she’d jumped out of a fairytale. My daughter would say she was a princess… a Disney princess even (I’m sure you can guess who). That incredible artistry is the handiwork of two creatives and friends whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with in the past. Lesley from Lush Hair & Makeup (hair) and Lisa Chester (makeup). Usually brides are shown previews of themselves as the hair and makeup is being applied so the end result doesn’t come as much of a surprise but with Elaina, she was blissfully looking out into the ocean as Lisa & Lesley worked their magic. When complete, Lisa held up a mirror for the reveal and I think of all the weddings I’ve been to, this was the first time I’ve seen a bride at the brink of tears, overwhelmed with happiness at the result. I just happened to be standing right in front of Elaina and the expression on her face (you can see below) is the feeling I hope all brides get to experience on their wedding day. If you’re a bride to be reading this post then there’s definitely something I can give you to take away here. It’s ABSOLUTELY worthwhile to get the right hair and makeup artists as well as the dress you want. I never rush hair and makeup artists on the day because I know that whilst we can take photos later, you can’t really fix the hair and makeup with editing. With dresses, I’ve also noticed that brides always end up buying the dress they wanted in the first place so you may as well go out and get the one your heart wants (that you can afford).

Justin on the otherhand was nervous… you could feel it as he waited for his bride but once she arrived you could definitely see the mix of emotions all over his face. The ceremony was beautifully run by Shannon Britten and after the formalities, Justin’s heart rate returned to normal and the rest of the day was filled with relaxed fun and laughter.

Here are my favourite images from the day and a list of vendors involved. Thanks to Adrian Tan for joining me behind the cameras again.

Sharleen and Reggie… this wedding was just something else. I haven’t actually met someone like Shaze since I shot Nikki & Glen’s wedding back in 2015. In fact it was Nikki who recommended me to shoot this wedding and she also put on a huge dessert table spread at the reception. There’s two reasons Sharleen and Nikki are so similar, as with Nikki, the moment I met Shaze we hit it off and I loved her personality! The permanent smile and happieness just radiates from her and you just want to absorb some for yourself. The second reason is  her focus and attention to detail. Shaze planned everything and left no stone unturned in the quest to make this wedding the best ever. I’ve seen almost everthing over my years of shooting weddings so not much surprises me but at this wedding it was like there was no end to the depth of detail… Even with two photographers we went around shooting everything we could find and I don’t even know if we managed to get it all because each time we thought we’d shot everything I’d find something (probably rose gold coloured) I hadn’t shot and that new thing would have their names laser etched into it. I kid you not!…

The ceremony was held at Bicton Quarantine Park and we jumped on the freo tram there. At the ceremony she had mismatched vintage chairs, lawn games, a barista, a huge grazing table, a magician, a bar, band (The Milkmen) and flowers galore. Everything you would need to make sure guests had a great time. I’ll try to include some of the vendors below. To help pull it all off, Shaze enlisted the services of Sophia Monique who was all over the fine details. The reception was held at Little Creatures in Fremantle with some amazing music and another awesome Band (Hans Fiance Band). A little bit of old school R&B is always good for the soul.

Here are my favourite images of the day. I haven’t included a lot of the detail images because you’d just end up scrolling down and down and down but outside of all that amazingness, there were many beautiful moments and at the end of the day a skater boy married a he girl loves and everyone gave them a high five.
