This MASSIVE announcement just dropped. I entered the International Wedding Photographer of the Year awards (IWPOTY) and this image won the Pre-wedding / Engagement category AND the OVERALL 2018 Competition Runner Up Prize!

This is an incredible way to finish off 2018 and my biggest accomplishment yet! We have a wonderful team that works so hard to make this all happen. Thanks to all our past couples for trusting us and allowing us to create beautiful artwork each day. We are always grateful and excited that we get the privilege to shoot for you. I always believed that we could produce the best photography in the world and this achievement proves we’re up there with the best of them.

This is another wedding I’ve waited a long time to shoot. Tom & Sam were married on the family orchard in Karragullen under the old avocado trees. We pulled all stops for their wedding including some drone images to capture the family property and rolling hills. Everything came together on the day including the serendipity of picking a night with a new moon and clear sky which gave way for some amazing portraits in the night sky. Here is a small collection of my favourite images.

These two were married at Joondalup Resort on a HUMID February day. Whilst it was uncomfortable with sweat dripping down our faces, we still had the best time.

The people are everything… I remember my first meeting with Paul and Jess. Pretty much the entire meeting we were cracking jokes and having a laugh so as soon as that meeting ended I knew it was a precursor to an epic wedding day. Adrian and I shooting this wedding… it was meant to be!

Here are my favourite images from their wedding. I’ve even included one of me at work shot by Adrian. I never generally include these images but in this case it was actually a very good memory of having us shoot their big day!

Nick & Chris’ wedding was probably one of the most challenging I’ve had to shoot. When we first met, Nick told me that they have common love of fitness and spend a LOT of time at the beach so it was only fitting that they tie the knot at Iluka beach. So the plan was a summer wedding in January out on the sand overlooking the Indian Ocean… and since it can get seriously hot they provided thongs and fans for all the guests…

Nick & Chris’ wedding was probably one of the most challenging I’ve had to shoot. When we first met, Nick told me that they have common love of fitness and spend a LOT of time at the beach so it was only fitting that they tie the knot at Iluka beach. So the plan was a summer wedding in January out on the sand overlooking the Indian Ocean… and since it can get seriously hot they provided thongs and fans for all the guests.

I wasn’t really paying attention to the weather forecast because in the last four years all my summer weddings have been pretty sweltering so it’s always a matter of making sure I have enough fluids and sunscreen so I can avoid heat exhaustion. In one of the last emails from Chris a couple days before the wedding she signs off with:

We are really excited for Saturday!! (rain, hail or shine!!)

Now why would anyone write that in the middle of Summer?! so I went to check the weather for Saturday and it was the complete opposite to what I expected….

Thunderstorms with a 100% chance of rain.

So without a backup plan in sight I met Chris in her hotel room at the Rendezvous Hotel Scarborough and she told me she was fine….

I’ll just dance in the rain.

When we arrived at the ceremony it is raining even harder than the morning but everyone was 100% comitted. I have never really tested any of my gear in the rain but apparently it’s weather sealed so there’s really only one way to find out if those claims are true so I just went for it. One of the guests even said “It’s great to see you out there, no hesitation” to which I responded “well if not me then who?” and it was definitely nice to not have any guests competing for photos.

It’s actually pretty cool to be thrown curveballs like this every now and then because we get to show a wedding that’s a little different. It also proves my point when I tell couples that what matters are the people who share the day with you and the moments that fly by. Whatever happens with the weather… it is what it is and my job is to make sure you can relive the day, rain hail or shine. It will be one of the best days of your life and I’ll show it to you!

There was a silver lining though. During the reception the skies cleared up enough to produce an amazing sunset so we still managed to duck out after speeches to make some creative portraits on the beach. To top it off, one of their photos was featured in the Sunday Times on Valentines day. What a win.

Here are my favourite images of the day… enjoy!

Owen & Farrah’s wedding at Millbrook Winery was probably one of the most relaxed weddings I’ve ever photographed. I know everyone says they’re relaxed but they never really are. Owen & Farrah’s Millbrook Winery wedding was probably one of the most relaxed weddings I’ve ever photographed. I know everyone says they’re relaxed but they never really are. This was their third celebration in a series of events so technically this was just a party with close friends and family. They were so relaxed that we enjoyed Maccas in one of the poshest suites in Perth. Can’t go past a good McNugget.

Independent of weddings, Millbrook Winery is one of my favourite restaurants in Western Australia. It’s nestled in Jarrahdale about 60mins drive south of Perth and once you get there, it almost surprises you how beautiful it is. If you think the rolling hills of vines are nice in Summer, wait until you visit in Autumn. Aesthetics aside, what really gets me is the quality of the food there. I’ve dined at many venues all over WA but this is one of a handful of restaurants I bring my family and it’s worth a special trip.

When Owen & Farrah rang and told me they wanted us at their wedding at Millbrook, I was delighted. I’ve been waiting two years to shoot a wedding at that venue so this was a first and hopefully will be the start of many more. Another first is shooting Farrah’s bridal prep at Crown Towers . The view from those floor-to-ceiling windows is probably the most spectacular vantage point in Perth. From that height, right next to the Swan River you actually feel like you’re in the clouds looking down onto the city. If you’re debating whether it’s worth the spend, I think it’s definitely one of a kind.

Farrah’s flawless hair and makeup was perfectly crafted by my dear friend Kassy at Creations by Kassy. Kassy did my wife’s hair at our wedding, that was even before I was a wedding photographer and that girl has not put a foot wrong since. She’s one of the most sought-after stylists in Perth.

Back to the day…

So I’ve mentioned how beautiful the grounds at Millbrook are. Well that’s all great when the weather is good but we had hard heavy rain come through which banished us undercover. I love when this happens because I get time to try images that I probably would never attempt if we spent all our time shooting outdoors. I love the staircases that run from the cellar door up to the restaurant. On our last visit to Millbrook I took photos of my wife and daughter in that stairwell and I always wanted to take that idea to a wedding.

You’ll find those images below along with a collection of my favourite images of the day.

Mark and Kate were married at Chapel Farm in Swan Valley. It’s no secret that this is a favourite venue for me in the valley. I’m not often booked to shoot rustic-type weddings and of all the venues in Perth, I’d say Chapel Farm fits that rustic charm just perfectly. So my modern moment-driven style doesn’t often meet rustic venues but for some reason I get booked to shoot here over and over. Hey I love it so keep them coming!

Mark and Kate are from the UK and many of their guests came all the way to Australia to see them get hitched. Their wedding was about as Australian as it gets. We were threatened by rain all morning but when it came time for the ceremony and photos we were gifted with an incredible sunset.

If you’re a bride and you’ve come to this page by searching “Chapel Farm Wedding” then here’s something for you. Belinda who manages the functions runs a seamless venue so you’ll love her. I don’t usually get to know any of the culinary team at any venue but Chapel Farm is an exception. Amy (head chef) has really upped the game and I’ve heard many compliments on the food from all my couples since she’s come back and taken control of the kitchen. If your gut (pardon the pun) is telling you to book this venue, you really should. You’ll love it.

There are two more vendors I wanted to mention… The ceremony was conducted by a friend of mine, Dilhari Gustavino from Kiss Me You Fool. When you look through our photos you’ll notice how much fun Mark and Kate are having during the ceremony. That’s all to Dilhari’s credit. Ceremonies can be pretty run-of-the-mill and I’m noticing a new breed of celebrant, people like Dilhari that are modernising ceremonies. She transforms what was traditionally boring into something fun, making everyone (even herself) laugh out loud!

Finally something has to be said of the wedding singer Joe Boshell. This was my first time meeting Joe and we always hope the entertainer/DJ can do a good job because the craziness of our dance floor photos rests on their shoulders. Usually with a one-man band you wonder if they can hold the floor and Joe killed it. Not only were Mark and Kate’s guests dancing the night away, his vocal abilities and musicianship really stood out (and we see a LOT of wedding singers!).

Here is a collection of our favourite images from the day.
