Francesco & Mallika’s wedding was one of the most educational and enjoyable wedding experiences of my career so far. I’ve shot a handful of Indian weddings now and this time I was invited to shoot the Gaye Holud, Mehndi event and wedding day. This wedding was planned to perfection and Mallika’s attention to detail was second to none. You can tell by how all the colours come together perfectly at the ceremony. All of this was pulled off seamlessly by the wedding team at Belvoir Homestead

Francesco & Mallika’s wedding was one of the most educational and enjoyable wedding experiences of my career so far. I’ve shot a handful of Indian weddings now and this time I was invited to shoot the Gaye Holud, Mehndi event and wedding day. I love Indian culture and Indian food but I’m new to all the cultural traditions. Mallika’s family was so patient with me and I’m grateful to Jonaki and Aastha (Mallika’s aunty and cousin) for explaining some of the cultural practices and food available. Let me tell you… One does not go hungry at an Indian wedding! I was made to feel like a member of the family and Sayanti (Mallika’s mum) was constantly making sure I had a full belly. Her reasoning? “We’ll get better pictures if the photographer is happy!”

Amen to that! Ahh so Asian. Life is generally better when you have a portable tandoori oven.

Francesco is Italian and his family travelled all the way to Perth from Milan. They’re about as stereotypically european as you get. Friendly but reserved and kind hearted. Then you throw them into the dance and festivities of Indian culture and they were ALL IN. Both feet. Turn up the music and they were right in the thick of the party.

This wedding was planned to perfection and Mallika’s attention to detail was second to none. You can tell by how all the colours come together perfectly at the ceremony. All of this was pulled off seamlessly by the wedding team at Belvoir Homestead.

As for us, we got right in on the action. We shot so many images at this wedding it was a record number of frames! When so much is happening and the moments don’t stop, what do I show?

When reviewing what I’d post for this wedding I realised something that I’d never noticed so obviously in the past. Many people think that photographers come and document a wedding. The assumption is that no matter who comes, they’re all presented with the same scenes and will more-or-less document the same story (maybe at different skill levels). However the reality is that with so much happening and such long coverage, the photographer actually decides how you will experience the day and what you see when you view the images.

Here is a small collection of my favourite images (65 to be exact) from all three days. It sums up how it felt to be right beside the action as well as the mood and experience of being part of Francesco and Mallika’s inner circle. I know the party is continuing in Calcutta and Milan so I can wait to hear more stories!

Future Indian brides… if you’re reading this, we’d definitely like more of this so please get in touch and we’ll make it an experience that’s even better than you remember!

The great thing about being able to spend time with a couple before the wedding is that on the big day, you feel more like part of the family rather than a wedding photographer. That feeling of being included and welcome is important especially when I get invited to be part of a culture that I’m not very familiar with. I’ve always felt that Indian weddings are perfectly suited to my style because I LOVE bright colours and emotive action-packed images. These weddings have everything I could ever ask for and more!…

Before their wedding day, I got to spend half a day with Rushil and Priyal and during that pre-wedding shoot I’d quickly found out that these two have quite a beautiful love story. One that started with them as childhood friends in Kenya, moving and experiencing life on different continents and eventually finding each other once again. These two are open, humble and conscientious individuals. Over coffee we discussed their reasons for being vegetarians and how they make choices in life with careful consideration of the world and people around them. I really learned a lot and at times forgot we were out to take photos.

Chris & Sam’s nuptials and reception were held at Barrett Lane. This is my first time shooting at this quaint little venue and I love it. It’s a small family run function venue in Swan Valley and you can see how much effort function manager David Prnich and family have put into the venue and surrounding gardens. The function and kitchen staff ran an impeccible event and If you’re looking for a venue for up to 100 guests right in the heart of the valley, you definitely need to have this one on your list…

When couples enquire about my photography, the first contact almost always comes from a bride. Sometimes I don’t even meet the groom until the wedding day itself but this time Chris filled out my contact form to organise the meeting. It turns out Chris is quite the avid landscape photographer and wanted to make sure he was on top of the photography for their wedding. On the morning of the big day I noticed some beautiful prints of Chris’ work hung around the walls. If you understand what’s required to make beautiful landscape images you’ll know that it sure isn’t easy. A lot of photographers love landscape and travel photography, they find it therapeutic. That’s just another way of saying it requires vast amounts of patience and tenacity to get up or stay behind at a location long enough and often enough to have enough opportunities to get the shot. On top of that, most great or interesting locations are hard to get to and you need to haul quite a bit of kit.

Sam is awesome… she must love Chris. She’s followed him and hauled his gear, listened to his photography stories and probably gotten sick and tired of it but they’re still together. A bit like the way my wife is so when you find someone like that, you marry her!

And he sure did. To propose Chris dragged Sam out onto the beach in Margaret River at sunset under the guise of getting a special shot. I can’t remember in the story if she happily followed but let’s say she did and Chris successfully put a ring on it.

Guy and Kerrie tied the knot and held their reception at Mosmans Restaurant. We had a warm balmy 35 degree day followed with some late rain clouds just before the reception. This brought in one of those rare red sunsets that come around a handful of times a year (when I happen to also have a camera handy). Here are my favourite images from the day…

Actually most of the day was pretty normal with a beautiful church ceremony followed by family photos and bridal party photos. Then we managed to shoot a little downstairs at the aquarium before heading up to the reception.

When I met Clyde and Shona we were going through the timeline just like the above until we got to the reception and they said they wanted to do the cake cutting and first dance straight away. I told them the sun wouldn’t have set yet so best to have it later but they insisted they’d need to get “everyone in a dancing mood as early as possible”. That’s when my ears pricked up… “why?”

Then they told me about this cool music video idea which required participation from everyone so the earlier people were willing to dance the more committed they would be to the video.

I got the idea and couldn’t wait for it!

Here are my favourite images from the day. As for that video? Once you get to the bottom of my images, check it out at the end of the post!

Krystle and Patrick were married on a warm summer day at Caversham House in February. The first email I got from Krystle was back in August 2014 about 18 months before her wedding. I was in China at the time visiting my wife’s family and wasn’t due back for another month so we exchanged a LOT of emails…. thousands of words in fact.

From that email exchange I felt like we clicked and spoke the same language. I could definitely see that Krystle was very thorough and organised but had a lot of questions and concerns she wanted addressed. It’s totally understandable as most couples get to meet me before booking and I was out of town for a long time. In her own words Krystle said:

Picking and booking the right photographer is of the utmost importance to me.

So we discussed everything, right down to the process of culling and editing photos. I’m not afraid of any questions, in fact I welcome them because of all the people around on the wedding day, I’m usually the one constant person within reach of the bride and groom throughout the day. So on top of the beautiful images, you’ll get peace of mind and a neverending smile.
